The Short Answer

A dental bone graft before an implant typically costs $500-$3,000 per site in 2026. That's on top of the implant itself, which runs $3,600-$5,400 for a single tooth before add-ons.

Why a Graft May Be Needed

When a tooth has been missing for a while, or after an extraction, the jawbone naturally shrinks. An implant needs a certain depth and width of bone to hold it securely. If there isn't enough, the surgeon may build the bone back up first with a grafting procedure.

  • Minor grafting — small defects, sometimes done at the same visit as the implant.
  • Sinus lift — adds bone above the upper molars, priced at $1,500-$5,000.
  • Larger ridge augmentations — bigger rebuilding jobs, priced toward the top of the range or beyond.

What's Included

The graft range covers the graft material and the surgical placement of the graft. Material types vary in cost — synthetic, donor, and your own bone are all used, and each has different pricing and healing characteristics. Your surgeon will recommend what fits your case.

What Affects the Price

  • How much bone is missing: Small grafts cost less than large rebuilding procedures.
  • Graft material: Autograft (your own bone) and some specialized materials cost more.
  • Location: State and urban/suburban/rural pricing factors apply here too. Compare states →
  • Combined procedures: Some surgeons place the graft and the implant in one visit; others stage them months apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Many patients have enough healthy bone for an implant. A graft is only needed when the jawbone has shrunk too far to support the implant securely.

Dental insurance rarely covers implant procedures, and bone grafting for an implant is usually treated the same way. Check your plan and ask for a written estimate before treatment.

The range shown here is per site — that is, per grafted area, usually one implant site.

Grafting is an add-on procedure with its own cost. The total implant estimate in our calculator adds this separately when you select it.
